Toxin Alert Inc., a biotechnology company based in Mississauga, Ont., has developed a method to alert consumers to the presence of four major causes of food poisoning–listeria, E. coli, salmonella and campylobacter. According to a report in the National Post, the detection system incorporates an antibody- based diagnostic test on the inside of typical PE food-storage film or bags. The antibodies react to the presence of bacteria triggering an alert symbol on the wrap.
More than a million food poisoning cases are reported in Canada annually. A spokesman for Toxin Alert says he expects the technology to be marketed through food processors and bag and film producers under their own trade names.
