College Farm organic hard candy is an all-natural confection with a twist: it’s wrapped in a nature-based package, a wrapper made from resins derived from corn. The wrapping film is made of Cargill Dow’s NatureWorks PLA polylactide resin.

NatureWorks PLA looks and performs equal to traditional confectionery films such as cellophane or oriented polypropylene, providing crystal clarity, superb twist retention, printability, strength, and flavor and aroma barrier.

“When this company conceived the idea of an organic candy, we thought environmentally-friendly packaging would be an ideal complement to the product line,” says David Hess, vice-president of operations for JoEl Inc., which makes College Farm candy. NatureWorks PLA “makes our candy truly different from anything else on the market today.”

JoEl is using NatureWorks PLA on one of its high-speed twist wrap machines, running about 1300 pieces per minute. Hess reports that the film performs comparably to cellophane or oriented polypropylene.
