The Automotive Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) recently presented an innovation award to a number of suppliers for their work on an all-plastic load- bearing, touch-off molding going on the 2005 Ford Mustang convertible. This deck lid closeout panel also incorporates a unique clip attachment to the vehicle. Recognized for their role in this application were material suppliers A. Schulman and Zeon Chemicals, molder Innatech; tooling supplier Dynamic Mold; system supplier Cooper Standard Automotive.

The molding is multi-shot molded from a grade of glass-filled nylon, Schulamid 66/6GF33H-330 YGYA Black, and a new TPV resin that is chemically bonded to the nylon. The lightweight component meets all appearance, durability and load requirements.

“Today’s consumers have greater expectations when it comes to appearance,” said Blake Synnestvedt, director engineering, Innatech. “The bar has been raised.”
