Medical manufacturer Abbott Ireland had the following requirements for a “spin collar”: use of polycarbonate material; part weight 0.4 g; direct side gating; 32 cavity tool; excellent gating point without gate blemish; shortest cycle times; unscrewing mechanism for the internal thread.
The requirements were met by Avenue Moldmaking Ireland using a hot runner system from Gunther. The nozzle design includes four side gating tips, each offset by 90 degrees on the tip pitch circle.
The nozzles are type 18LHR with a shaft diameter of 18 mm. The pitch circle of the nozzle tips, however, is 22 mm. Due to the larger pitch circle diameter, the nozzle tips are in direct contact with the part surface. Therefore, there is no cold slug between the nozzle tip and part.
To install the hot runner nozzles, a split cavity block is required. Degating is accomplished by shearing the gate.
A hydraulic, fully-balanced, eight nozzle 230V H-manifold is used for this application.
