A University of Minnesota professor has demonstrated a method of welding polyethylene to polypropylene. Frank Bates, a professor of chemical engineering and materials science, discovered the method after two years of research sponsored by Exxon Corp. Bates says he believes it is the first time anyone has succeeded in welding the two plastics together.

The discovery has the potential to displace glue and adhesives used to join films and parts in diapers, car bumpers, car seats and many other parts, according to Bates.
