Aggressive performance, ergonomic design and attractive styling needed to combine with high impact resistance in the MS9500 Series Voyager retail scanners from Metrologic Instruments Inc.
A polycarbonate material from DSM Engineering Plastics, Xantar FC23 UR, was chosen to meet these requirements.
“The higher molecular weight of this material makes it tougher than many other available resins, which became evident in our drop tests,” says Metrologic engineer Tom Carullo.
Compared to commonly used PC/ABS alloys, Xantar FC 23 UR provides up to twice the resistance to impact stresses, especially at cold temperatures.
The polycarbonate compound used by Metrologic meets its needs for easy processing, Underwriters Laboratories 94 V-O flammability requirements, and high aesthetic standards.
