CPIA bestowed its Lifetime Achievement Award on Ron Marachi at its annual Gala. Marachi joined Bayer, Egypt in 1955 and immigrated to Canada in 1965, taking a position with Bayer Canada. Marachi retired from Bayer in 1990 as business manager of plastics, and worked for several years as a consultant to Albis. His association with the CPIA began in 1992, when he joined the Canadian Plastics Institute. In his time with CPIA Marchi wrote 11 training courses covering a wide-range of plastics-related topics.

Marachi, who won a Canplast Award in 1989, says he made a career out of troubleshooting.

“I had good luck at Bayer because, when the company discovered polycarbonate, people didn’t know how to process it. I showed them how. I was in the right place, at the right time.”

Marachi says one of the highlights in his time with CPIA was the development of a plastics training course in Brazil for people who couldn’t read. The course material was almost entirely graphical. Marachi says the two biggest changes in the plastics industry over the course of his career have been the rate of the advancement of technology and global competition.
