Battenfeld GmbH and five partners have launched a multi-lateral “ceramic screw project” to develop a cost-effective method of processing resins with a high filler content. Specifically, project partners are designing, manufacturing and testing ceramic components for plasticizing units in trial production conditions.

Ceramic and ceramic and metal hybrid extrusion components, including screws and barrels have been extensively tested under laboratory conditions and are now ready for production trials. New design methods, such as adjusting shapes to minimize tensile stress, are being used to compensate for the inherent brittleness of ceramic materials.
