Collisions with building columns cost many millions of dollars each year through injury, repair and downtime, not to mention undermining the structural integrity of the building. For these reasons, Warehouse Systems Inc. has designed Column Sentry — clamps made from linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) that fit around building columns like two halves of a donut to protect them from costly damage caused by the impact of fork lift trucks and other vehicles.

The LLDPE used is both semi-flexible and resistant to stress cracks. It prevents impact energy from reaching the column by absorbing it in two ways: first, protective pockets in Column Sentry resist as much of the blow as possible, sometimes all of it, depending on the force; second, if the collision is so hard that the pockets yield, then the impact of the blow is cushioned by restricted air flow out of the product.

Collision tests have been conducted with a 2,300 kg lift truck hitting an installed Column Sentry at speeds of up to 11 km/h without damage to the lift truck, the building column or Column Sentry.
