The lastest concept car from European auto designers Rinspeed is a high-tech marvel that uses sensors to measure biometric data about the driver and then exerts influence on the driver by using a variety of patterns, color, music and fragrances. The idea is to put the driver into a state of relaxed attentiveness.

The variable color aspect is made possible by a electroluminescent film technology developed by Bayer MaterialScience and a Swiss electronics specialist Lumitec. This glowing material is integrated into the car’s interior panelling, which lights up the entire cockpit with ambient light.

“In the Senso, we are showing what breathtaking possibilities this new technology can open up for car designers,” says Johannes Seesing, an automotive specialist with Bayer. “The glowing material can be made into any shape, and does not need electric light bulbs or LEDs.”

The high-tech surface is computer-controlled and shines green, blue or orange, depending on the applied voltage.

The optical stimuli are reinforced by sounds and fragrances that are emitted by the car, and should the computer sense symptoms of tiredness in the driver, electric motors integrated in the seat will shake him or her awake by vibrating.
