Gone are the handling complications and mess from improper usage that have prevented many plastics processors from exploiting the advantages of liquid color, says Riverdale Color Mfg. Inc.

A comprehensive color management system developed by Riverdale eliminates all the housekeeping tasks. Called the Pump-in-a-Drum system, it uses an innovative metering mechanism whose pump is inside a standard-size drum that remains sealed while at the customer’s plant.

The system meters color through a sealed tubing assembly and changeover between empty and full drums is automatic. Empty drums are returned to Riverdale Color.

“The processor literally never sees a drop of colorant,” says Chuck Irish, president of Riverdale Color. “Spillage, leakage, cleanup, tube replacement, pump maintenance, environmental concerns and disposal costs — all the complications of conventional liquid color handling — disappear.”

Medical TPEs mimic PVC properties

For medical applications requiring a PVC- or latex-free material, GLS Corp. is introducing a new line of thermoplastic elastomers. Key benefits of the injection molding and extrusion grades include clarity, high temperature resistance, and mechanical properties such as tensile and tear strength. Extrusion grades 223-007 and 223-008 were designed to offer PVC-like kink resistance and snap back.

Metallocene-catalyzed coating resin

ExxonMobil Chemical Company announced it has commercialized Exxco 012 enhanced performance extrusion coating resin made from proprietary Exxpol catalyst technology.

The sealing properties of the product make it effective in preventing leakage in liquid food packaging, and provides tear strength and puncture resistance properties significantly better than those of LDPE. Mechanical properties are similar to plastomers.

Weather-resistant polystyrene

NOVA Chemicals has made its Styrosun polystyrene available in North America. The EPDM-modified, high-impact polystyrene exhibits higher resistance to UV rays and oxidative deteroriation than traditional styrenic polymers.

Stryrosun is currently used in numerous outdoor applications, including recreational vehicles, household appliances, telecommunications equipment and placards. Applications for the material are also growing in the wood-replacement market, for parts such as decking, railings and decorative molding.
