Nearly two years after its purchase by a group of overseas investors, Komtech Inc. has implemented a strategic plan aimed at expanding its customer base and sales in the consumer electronics market. It added 16,000 sq. ft. of floor space to its Kanata, Ont. facility last year, for a total 40,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and storage area. It has put in a clean room and plans to be QS 9000 registered by the end of 2001. Additionally, while it still defines it core business as injection molding, Komtech intends to extend the range of its contract electronics manufacturing capabilities and provide customers with a wide variety of design and assembly services, according to Raj Mathur, president and CEO.
“We’re working with a number of large electronic companies on development projects,” says Mathur. “A lot of effort is required on the front end to grow in this market.” Mathur reports the company can provide technical support in developing design concepts by use of rapid tooling methods.
The company’s traditional product line has been almost exclusively office telephone sets made for Mitel. Mathur says it is working on one development project related to hand-held devices. The facility has 16 Engel injection presses ranging from 28 to 550 tons. Mathur says the next machine purchased will most likely be an all-electric in the range of 60 tons.
