The acquisition of Ajax, Ont.-based Rouen Plastics Ltd. by Komtech Inc. allows the Ottawa-based injection molding solutions provider to better serve Tier One automotive parts and solutions suppliers in Southern Ontario.
Raaj Mathur, president and CEO of Komtech, said most of the Ontario-based Tier One buyers of its injection molded solutions and parts are located between Toronto and Windsor, the centre of Ontario’s automotive manufacturing industry. By having operations located in Ajax, Komtech can now get parts and services to its customers faster.
Rouen Plastics was an attractive acquisition for Komtech because the firm offered a wealth of injection molding expertise, including tool and die manufacturing, skills Komtech could immediately leverage. Komtech has added a third shift to the operations and plans are in place to expand the operations, according to Mathur.
The name of Rouen Plastics will also be changed to Komtech Mfg. Inc.
For the last 20 years, Komtech’s primary business has been with Canada’ high-tech and telecommunications sectors, providing molded plastic solutions and services to such firms as Nortel Networks in Ottawa.
“When the tech bubble burst in 2000, that was when we started looking at diversification and when we started to look at the automotive market,” Mathur said. “Today, we are running almost 80 per cent of our business for the automotive sector.”
Komtech is a QS 9000 registered company with in-house tooling facilities and uses molding machines ranging from 28 to 500 tons. The company also has facilities in China, India and Malaysia.
