Auto supplier MANN+HUMMEL is producing the first integrated air-cleaner module for heavy-duty truck applications. The module, which is injection molded from glass-filled polypropylene and nylon, combines the air cleaner, cabin air filter, housings and bracketing into a single module. According to Michael Willig, MANN+HUMMEL program manager for air systems, the new air filtration unit uses 50% fewer parts and 75% fewer fasteners than previous designs, reducing assembly time and costs.

The module went into production in late 2002 for use in Volvo Trucks’ new VN Class 8 series and the company’s VHD trucks. The module is produced at MANN+HUMMEL’s facility in Mexico City. The air cleaner housing is produced on a 1500 ton press and the bracket is produced on a 750 ton press. The module’s clean air elbow is hot-plate welded to the housing.
