Taking advantage of the excellent moisture barrier properties of Topas COC (cyclic olefin copolymer) resins from Ticona, The Henkel Group (Dusseldorf) was able to eliminate a polypropylene overwrap from the packaging of its Sil stain removing powder.

Henkel wanted to simplify the packaging for Sil to achieve cost savings, yet retain moisture protection.

The moisture barrier is now integrated directly into the cardboard packaging. The plastic content is kept below the 5% limit specified by Germany’s Green Dot system to qualify as eco- friendly, single-material package. The Topas COC layer provides the required moisture protection at a thickness of only 20 g/m2.

In contrast, using an LDPE resin to produce the barrier layer would result in an LDPE content of about 20% to achieve the level of moisture protection provided by Topas COC.

To produce the Sil stain remover package, the cardboard and paper are extrusion laminated with the Topas COC barrier layer. Blanks are cut, which can then be folded and printed like conventional cardboard.
