Automotive parts supplier Mann + Hummel has produced what it says is the world’s first oil module with a completely plastic housing. The part is produced for Audi. The oil module has several integrated functions, including a crankcase ventilation system, oil cooler, oil pressure sensor and pressure regulator valve.
Compared with its aluminum counterpart, this module weighs 10 oz. less, and the price of the glass-filled nylon 66 is lower than that of aluminum.
Tooling for the part offers another significant cost advantage. Tooling for a cast aluminum housing can produce approximately 100,000 to 150,000 parts before a new tool is needed, while the tooling for a plastic housing can produce over one million parts.
“The plastic oil module has been well received by North American OEMs,” says Thomas Petschl, business development manager with Mann & Hummel USA Inc.
The plastic oil module received the top award for innovation from the Society of Plastics Engineers, Central Europe section.
