The Plastics Group of America is using a new 40% calcium-carbonate filled polypropylene to injection mold test tube holders for use in laboratory applications.
Polifil C-40 was specified by the molder for its dimensional stability. The cylindrical test tube holders have slots on each side of the part for matching up with mating components in a centrifuge. The test tubes are inserted in the part, and the part is then spun in the centrifuge to separate liquids from solids. The Plastics Group specially compounded this material for the application, with blowing agents added to the calcium carbonate to increase the material’s weight to avoid caving in or buckling out from the force. The parts are also molded in different colors to indicate the size of the test tube holes, ranging from 1/2 in. to 1 and 1/4 in. in diameter.
