A massive CNC milling/turning centre purchased by Canadian Feed Screws Mfg. Ltd. (Toronto) is expected to reduce lead times and improve screw quality. John Vasilev says the Mazak multi-axis machine will allow a single set-up process with large workpieces for screws, barrels or related components. With a single set-up the machine is able to turn and contour, mill, bore, grind, drill and tap. It has an automated tool changer, and can handle a maximum diameter of 36 in. and length of 240 in.
“I believe this machine is unique in Canada in terms of its size and capabilities,” says Vasilev.
Canadian Feed Screw plans to spend an additional $3 million on its screw and barrel operations over the next four years.
P.E.M. Feed Screws (Toronto) recently installed a CNC milling machine as well, also from Mazak. “This machine represents a substantial capital investment for our company,” says Stefan Riedelsheimer, president of P.E.M., “but it is an essential investment to meet our customers’ increasing expectations regarding quality and accuracy.” P.E.M. has undertaken four months of intensive training and testing, and the new machine is now in full operation.
