Sticking a square peg into a round hole just doesn’t work — that’s the reasoning behind Elmer’s Products Inc.’s new rectangular containers for its line of wood filler products.

After listening to customers lament about the difficulties scooping the wood-filling putty with a putty knife’s long straight edge, Elmer’s turned to a rectangular tub from IPL Inc.’s packaging wing.

“The truth is, IPL is one of the few suppliers providing rectangular tub packaging that is heavy enough for industrial use and yet still provides good value,” said Michelle Manning Elmer’s product manager for Do-It-Yourself and Instant Krazy Glue products.

However, it was IPL’s use of in-mold labeling (IML) that sealed the deal. The printed polypropylene (PP) label is affixed to the tub right in the mold, and because IPL was able to provide a stock colour that matched Elmer’s trademark cap, Elmer’s was able to maintain the traditional branding customers are familiar with.

Plus, these new containers don’t cost much more than Elmer’s old round tubs, Manning noted. “Beyond the initial tool and die, our financial investment was more than acceptable. This has allowed us to keep the retail cost of each unit virtually the same,” she said.
