Dow Plastics is introducing two new thermoplastic polyolefins for specific automotive applications. The company is planning to have a unique conductive TPO ready for commercial applications no later than the end of the second quarter of this year. According to Jane Palmieri, global business development manager for new materials, the TPO will be mainly targeted for painted fascia applications. Palmieri says the material’s conductive properties will greatly enhance the transfer efficiency of spray painting operations. The TPO can be injection molded on standard machines and tools; as well, is an advance on older technology.

“With this material, we’ve managed to avoid some of the pitfalls with older conductive polymer systems,” Palmieri reports. “We have not sacrificed impact, flow or modulus properties with this material.”

Dow is also introducing a new grade of TPO for instrument panel applications. Inspired 7030EZ is a scratch and mar resistant TPO. According to Dow, one special property of the resin is its ability to be laser scored, allowing the manufacture of seamless air bags.
