Skiers can now more easily and quickly mount and adjust their skis thanks to a new all-plastic, screw-less binding co-developed by Madshus AS and Rottefella AS.

A slide and click-on plate, made from an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer from polymer and elastomer distributor Distrupol, is attached to the top of the ski. The binding, made from a Distrupol polyacetal (POM), slides onto the plate and can lock in five different positions.

“The plate material properties had to be close to the ski’s top surface in order to maintain integrity and withstand the mechanical loads of skiing and to resist low temperatures, snow, ice, water and exposure to UV radiation,” Jon Asle Sjoli, a polymer engineer at Distrupol, explained. “(Chemical supplier) LG Chem’s ABS HI-100 was able to satisfy all requirements.”

For the binding, Sjoli added, Distrupol used Delrin 127 POM from DuPont because of its high strength at low temperatures.
