The Canadian Plastics Industry Association named Don Farnell, president of Farnell Packaging of Dartmouth, NS, Industry Leader at the group’s annual Blue Ribbon Gala and awards dinner. Don established his business as a sales agency in 1961, and gradually branched into distributing, then manufacturing. The company, which employs about 140 people, makes high-quality, blown-film packaging products for the food and other industries. Last year, Farnell Packaging became the first company to have a compostable product certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI). BPI granted its “compostable” logo to Farnell’s plain and printed biodegradable films and bags. Over the years, Don became involved in environmental issues related to packaging through the Atlantic section of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association.

“Don’s a very positive guy,” said David Stanfield, Farnell Packaging’s director of sales and marketing. “He’s always open to new ideas, new approaches to doing things.”
