The winner of the 2002 SPE Industrial Plastics Product Design Award is a rotational molded roof for the new integrated cab of a John Deere agricultural tractor, the 5000 Twenty Series. Manufactured by Centro Inc. of North Liberty, Iowa, the roof contains eight cored features and 63 molded-in inserts. The roof is made of LLDPE supplied by ExxonMobil Chemical. The design incorporates molded-in ductwork that eliminates seals and mounting hardware. The molded-in inserts provide mounting points for the complete HVAC system, lights and the audio system. Improved thermal and sound insulation is provided by a molded-in LLDPE foam layer. Centro developed and used an advanced molding process to mold the roof.
