By using BASF’s Terlux transparent acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer, Philips, the Dutch manufacturer of electric shavers, was able to provide a clear plastic casing that allows the consumer to peer inside its new Philishave Coolskin electric razor.

Manufactured by means of two-component injection molding of polycarbonate and Terlux ABS, Philips believes the Coolskin will stand out visually from the competition, as well as offer better chemical resistance to soap and shaving gels.

“The high content of acrylonitrile in the ABS increases the polarity of the plastic, making it more resistant than standard plastics and comparable transparent grades,” Luc Gysels, BASF’s market development manager responsible for styrenics, explained.

Additionally, Terlux is more impact-resistant than other transparent plastics due to the good adhesion of the material to the shaver’s polycarbonate housing.
