General Plastex’s new ceramic-lined barrels extend barrel life in applications using nylon 6/6, PVC and other corrosive compounds. The barrel, which can be produced from D2 or other alloys, is treated with a composite ceramic material that is thermochemically bonded to the interior surface of the barrel. Producing a ceramic thickness of 0.002-0.003 in., an interphase between the ceramic material and the metal surface creates a bond that results in a substrate with a bond strength in excess of 10,000 psi, leaving no porosity for chemical corrosion to occur. A field test of the barrel conducted over a three year period revealed virtually no barrel wear after 12,000,000 cycles of injection molding.
