In 2002, executives at film and bag producer Alte-Rego Corp. (Toronto) recognized that their existing software systems would not keep pace with the complexity of their expanded manufacturing and marketing capacities.

The goal was to find software that would easily integrate their front office, manufacturing, supply chain and accounting.

After evaluating several systems, Alte-Rego chose Tori-flex from PlastiSoft, an enterprise software solution developed specifically for the plastic flexible packaging industry. “We selected Tori-flex because of its plastic industry features and the fact it was already customized to our specific business. Tori-flex functions cover:

– sales and customer service, including customer quotations, sales orders, customer information and shipping management;

– manufacturing, including job costing, work orders, bill of material routings, scheduling, real-time production reporting and monitoring, WIP and inventory control;

– accounting, including invoicing, purchasing, G/L/AR/AP and credit and payroll;

– financial and management reporting.

With instant access to real-time information, the company was able to review the current status of all processes including production schedules, inventory control, customer order and billing information. In addition, the executives were more confident that the information they evaluated provided an accurate analysis of business performance and a reliable forecasting tool.

Alte-Rego wanted to rapidly implement the system in the manufacturing plant, and the industry specific features that come standard with Tori-flex made it easy for operators to recognize system processes. Touch screens added to ease of use, faster input of data and reduced human errors. Shop floor bar-coding was also automated. All of these factors contributed to reducing training time and downtime.

The plastic industry specific costing features improved the speed and accuracy of costing raw materials, labor and packaging for each job. During implementation, Alte-Rego was able to verify data input which allowed them to build a bank of information that would accurately reflect real costs for each production job.

As Alte-Rego’s business has grown, the daily demand for instant customer information has increased significantly. After installing Tori-flex, the company was able to reduce its turn-around time for such activities by half and significantly reduced its requirements for customer service resources.
