Peerless, a contract manufacturer and injection molder, recently teamed up with TPE supplier GLS Corp. to provide a new look and feel to a portable desk for laptop computers.
The redesigned desk was to be lighter, thinner and more compact than its predecessor, and have the added appeal of colorful accents (flame orange, sky blue and lava gray), soft legs and a soft, grippy feel. The catch is that the TPEs were to be molded onto translucent polycarbonate.
“We all knew,” says Peerless’ president Scott Taylor, “that polycarbonate is difficult to overmold onto. Specifically, there was the bonding issue, plus we’d experienced poor flow issues with other brands of TPEs, and colorability and ease of molding problems as well. GLS was one of several TPE brands we looked into, but the combination of attributes of their special Versaflex OM1060 overmolding grade fit the bill perfectly.”
