Plastics derived from natural materials, biopolymers, are finding a number of new and innovative uses in biomedical applications, according to a report released by Technical Insights (www.insights.com). The new applications include artificial skin, heart valves and other organs grown on biopolymer “scaffolding”. Biopolymers are biodegradable and biocompatible, which makes them an ideal substitute for materials such as silicone.
