After harsh ocean weather conditions caused the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) windows on his yacht to become cloudy, scratched and brittle, Dieter Gnegeler, turned to a scratch-resistant, plasticizer-free thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from Bayer MaterialScience.

Gnegeler, owner of European plastics compounding firm GEBA Kunststoffcompounds GmbH, chose Bayer’s Texin DP 3041 TPU. Because the sun’s heat will soften the resin, he reasoned small scratches caused by abrasive sea salt on the Texin DP 3041 windows would virtually repair themselves.

Additionally, because Texin DP 3041 TPU is plasticizer-free, the window panels would retain their flexibility for a long time. Texin DP 3041 TPU is touted for having high flexural fatigue strength and buckling resistance, which prevents cracking and clouding from occurring at the panel folds.
