Researchers at the University of Alberta are moving ahead with testing of polymers produced from canola oil. The Alberta Bioplastics Network (ABN) is commissioning a pilot plant to produce large quantities of canola-based monomers which can then be made into prototype molded or extruded products for testing. ABN is a multi-institutional initiative based at the University of Alberta (Edmonton) which aims to develop a bio-polymer industry within Alberta based on canola and flaxseed oils.
Dr. Suresh Narine, director of ABN, recently told a canola producers’ conference his group has produced plastics from canola that could be used for molded auto parts, medical tubing, insulation, protective coatings, rigid food packaging and packaging films. Narine is optimistic that Alberta will have a commercial canola-based polymers plant within three years.
