Demand for foamed plastics in the U.S. is forecast to grow 2.7 per cent annually through 2013 to 8.4 billion pounds, valued at US$27.1 billion, according to a new study by market research firm The Freedonia Group.

Slightly better growth is expected for foamed flexible urethane than its rigid counterpart, the report – entitled “Foamed Plastics” – said.

“Construction and packaging together accounted for nearly 60 per cent of all foamed plastics demand in 2008,” the report said. “Construction will provide the best opportunities for foamed plastics as a result of expanding insulation applications in the building and industrial segments, as well as health prospects for carpet underlay.”
