In a move to cater to a growing demand for diffusion lighting applications in China, chemical supplier Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) has broken ground on a new plant in south China’s Guangzhou City that will produce solid sheet polycarbonate.
According to BMS, the new facility – its first solid sheets plant in the country – will make 12,000 tons of polycarbonate solid sheet when production starts by late 2012.
Polycarbonate solid sheet is mainly used in producing optical application plates, architecture glazing, LED light box and other diffusion lighting applications. “Our aim is to bring Bayer closer to customers with its customized solutions and market-oriented expertise of high-quality materials,” said Johannes M. Dietsch, chairman of Bayer (China) Ltd. According to BMS, China’s polycarbonate solid sheet market is forecast to grow from 55,000 tons today to 90,000 tons in 2015.
