Wal-Mart Canada closed a recently unionized store in Jonquiere, Que a week earlier than previously announced. The company said it was closing the store early due to low merchandise inventory, not because the company was running from the union.
The Quebec Labor Relations Board had automatically certified the store last year. After negotiating with the United Food and Commercial Workers union, the company said in February it could not operate the store "efficiently and profitably.
Wal-Mart had announced plans to close the store on May 6, but instead closed the store on Friday, April 29. Contract negotiations are on-going at Quebec’s other unionized Wal-Mart store, located in Saint-Hyacinthe.
