Free single-use plastic bags will be banned in South Australia (SA) by the end of the year, the government of that country has announced.

The government said legislation was being drafted to ban the bags from January 1, 2009, and would be introduced to State Parliament in April.

“A ban in our state alone could see almost 400 million less plastic bags entering the SA waste and litter streams every year,” said Premier Mike Rann.

The legislation will prevent all retailers in South Australia from handing out free plastic bags to customers, and make it possible to place fines on those that continue to do so.
