Canadian industries increased their use of their production capacity for the second consecutive quarter between April and June, according to the latest numbers from Statistics Canada. However, plastic product manufacturers reported a five per cent decrease in capacity utilization compared to the second quarter of 2006.

The industries collectively operated at 83 per cent of their capacity in the second quarter of 2007, up slightly from 82.8 per cent in the first quarter. These back-to-back gains have halted four consecutive quarters of decline in 2006.

Plastic product manufacturers reported capacity utilization of 71.1 per cent, up marginally from 69.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2007.

However, despite the marginal growth, the positive change did not measure up to the second quarter of 2006. Plastic product manufacturers were using 76.1 per cent of their production capacity at the same time last year.
