Mississauga, Ont.-based PET packaging manufacturer MPI Packaging Inc. has opened a new production facility in Riverside, Calif., just outside Los Angeles. The company, which specializes in stretch blow molding of bottles and jars for the liquor, food, health, beauty and personal care markets, said that the facility will allow them to better serve the west coast.

“We have always had a few clients on the west coast, and now their growth and the additional clients have been able to support the need for a new facility,” said company president Ron O’Brien in an interview with Canadian Plastics.

The new plant gives MPI an additional 30,000 square feet for production, in addition to its existing 80,000 square foot Mississauga headquarters.

The company is currently operating two blow molding machines from Mag-Plastic in the Riverside facility, and expects two more in the next four months. The Riverside location is currently a 24 million unit facility, and O’Brien would like to see it grow into a 100 million unit facility.

“It reduces costs for the customer because we are regionally located,” he noted. O’Brien also explained that the company used to contract out some of its west coast production prior to opening the new plant. “It improves the quality control we have, because we control the production.”
