Tortona, Italy-based PET producer Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G) has announced plans to launch a PET plant in the U.S.

M&G said the new single line plant will have a capacity of approximately 1.8 billion lbs/year, more than 80 per cent of which is scheduled to come on-stream in the first half of 2009.

The new facility will make use of the company’s EasyUp SSP technology, which was also implemented at M&G’s new plant in Suape, Brazil.

The U.S. location of the plant will be announced once the last site agreements and details are finalized, and a PTA feedstock has been secured.

Company officials said that the plant would help M&G reaffirm its commitment to the North American markets, and address the anticipated PET capacity shortage in the U.S. by 2009.

“We believe that PET industry margins are still depressed when compared to other industries providing similar value to their customers,” said Marco Ghisolfi, CEO of M&G’s Polymers Business Unit. “[However,] as industry leaders, we feel it is our responsibility to bridge the expected capacity gap to support our contract customers and the sustainability of the North American PET industry’s growth.”

M&G has a PET resin production capacity of almost 1.6 million tons per annum in 2007, and the North American investment is expected to boost capacity to more than 2.5 million tons.
