While still an embryonic segment of the plastics industry, nanocomposites are expected to be a major growth segment for the next few years. Market research specialists Principia Partners estimate that the US$75-million nanocomposites market will grow to more than US$250 million in 2008.
Principia Partners is conducting a study of the nanocomposites market, and will release a study, to subscribers only, in August 2005.
According to Principia, the leading nano-fillers in R&D and commercial programs are layered silicate nanoclays, nanotalcs, carbon nanotubes and graphite platelets. The commercial potential for carbon nanotubes has increased recently as prices have dropped what was formerly available at nearly US$100 per gram can now be had in masterbatch form for about US$50 per pound.
