DuPont Packaging has officially expanded its Biomax Strong family of polymer additives to include an FDA-compliant grade for food contact applications. Biomax Strong additives improve the performance of bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) packaging.

DuPont Biomax Strong 120 toughens PLA while maintaining compliance with food contact requirements in the US and Europe. DuPont previously introduced a similar additive for use in non-food applications in August 2006.

“Offering a food contact compliant grade of Biomax Strong gives DuPont a way to help food marketers take better advantage of an environmentally preferred solution in packages such as clamshells used in fresh produce sections,” said DuPont Packaging’s global market manager Shanna Moore in a statement.

According to DuPont, Biomax Strong enhances impact strength, flexibility and melt stability with minimal reduction in package clarity. When used at recommended levels, the company says PLA packaging made with the additive outperforms traditional products.
