The Ontario region of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) is hosting a breakfast seminar that will examine the economic health of the plastics industry.

Scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, the session will be held at the Toronto Airport Mariott Hotel (901 Dixon Rd.), the session will look at year end 2007 data and compare it to data for the past 10 years. It will also place plastics industry results in context with other manufacturing sectors and the economy in general.

“While shipments of plastics products declined by six percent in 2007 over the previous year, the key question is whether this is part of the industry’s normal cycle or whether the sector is seeing long term structural change as a result of a strong dollar and increased global competition,” the CPIA said in press release concerning the session.

According to the CPIA, Bill Empey, managing partner at Toronto-based economic analysts Prism Economics will highlight the findings of a five-year labour market study he undertook last year for the Canadian Plastics Sector Council.
