Tillsonburg, Ont.-based automotive supplier DDM Plastics has announced that it will cut more than 460 jobs at the company’s plant. The layoffs will come into effect January 1, 2009, and leave the company with a total of approximately 200 employees.
DDM Plastics is part of Ill.-based Flex-N-Gate, and primarily manufactures front-end plastic parts for Ingersoll-based Cami Automotive and several Ford plants. The company is Tillsonburg’s largest employer.
Slowdowns and downturns in business are being attributed for the company’s decision to lay off a large number of its workforce. According to Jim Nugent of the International Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union, which represented the workers at the plant, the news came as a shock to the plant’s workers.
“It’s huge because it’s only going to leave 200 employees in the plant,” he said to the Tillsonburg News. “I believe people are in shock. I think they visualized there would be some layoffs, but not to that magnitude.”
