Wal-Mart Canada has announced that as part of its goal to reduce the packaging in products sold in its stores, it will phase out all PVC plastic packaging in the energy saving light bulb category and replace it with cardboard packaging.

According to the company, the change would eliminate approximately 150,000 pounds of PVC plastic waste each year.

“Just eight per cent of Wal-Mart Canada’s environmental footprint is related to our own operations,” said Guy McGuffin, the company’s vice president. “The remainder is linked to the products we sell, so we’ve been working for some time with suppliers and challenging them to make products and packaging with the environment in mind.”

Wal-Mart has set a goal to reduce packaging in its stores by five per cent by 2013. The company has also introduced a packaging scorecard to help achieve the goal.
