Battenfeld Injection Molding Technology, along with Summerer Technologies and Exatec, will be showcasing the production of large car windows from polycarbonate using the IMPore (In-Mold-Pressing) injection-compression process. Up until now, automotive glazing applications have been limited to smaller windows with a surface area of about 0.5 m(2). The system that will be on display at the K Show is capable of producing windows with 1 m(2) of surface area. The manufacturing line consists of a HM 20000/19000 Battenfeld two-platen injection molding machine with a two-platen module, a special in-mold folding mechanism and a Kuka robot.
Low-pressure injection-compression molding, along with an in-mold folding mechanism, are the keys in producing a larger window without internal stresses. The folding mechanism opens a wedge-shaped embossing gap, which optimizes in-mold pressure distribution during the injection and compression phases.
