Clondalkin Group, a Dublin, Ireland-based producer of flexible and specialist packaging products, has acquired Orangeville, Ont.-based flexible packaging converter Direct Plastics Group.

Direct Plastics has been serving customers in Canada and the U.S. since 1998, and supplies high quality packaging products to the frozen food, confectionery, horticulture and animal care markets.

The acquistion will help Clondalkin expand its North American presence, which consists of 14 manufacturing facilities across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico.

“We have significantly expanded our product capability, technology range and geographic reach in recent years to enhance our customer service offerings,” said Clondalkin CEO Norbert McDermott in a press release.

Prior to the acquisition deal, the Direct Plastics Group consisted of Direct Plastics Ltd. and Nico Films Inc. Direct Plastics Ltd. is manufacturer and printer of flexible packaging, while Nico Films Inc. focuses on the extrusion of flexible films.

Direct Plastics also acquired the assets of Orangeville, Ont.-based Performance Packaging Inc. in 2005, and relocated its operations to the newly-purchased facility.

“The truly exciting part of this deal is the opportunity to continue to grow our business art part of an international business group,” said Direct Plastics president and co-founder Craig Harris. “After a close search, we chose Clondalkin as our new owners as they are determined to grow the business and we gain access to over 40 operations throughout North America and Europe.”
