EXACAD: Quebec solutions provider supports sustainable production*

Just celebrating its 20th anniversary, Boisbriand, Que.-based Exacad unveiled a new branding several months ago designed to reinforce the company’s commitment to excellence by constantly updating and innovating its equipment, technologies and service to provide its customers with sustainable and tailor-made solutions for high performance injection molding. Excellence being literally part of their DNA, Exacad was recognized in the first year of its founding as the company received the SODET 1995 Investment award, in the Young Entrepreneur category.

COMPETENCY AND EXPERTISE
Although a lot of plastic has been injected into the molds since then, Exacad’s mission has always been to create and implement clever solutions perfectly adapted to each plastic injection molding project.

In 2010, its contribution to the plastic industry was recognized by its peers as the company was awarded the Honoris Innova Laureate in the Sustainable development — Innovative Product category. Last May 5th, Exacad struck again, receiving the Gold Award in the National Bank SME Award 2015 under $5M for the Laval, Northern and Western Québec region. This regional award brings Exacad another step closer to become finalist in the upcoming Provincial Gala National Bank SME Award 2015h.)

Their projects are the source of our motivation and our passion”, says Linda Tremblay, Exacad’s communication director. “Our clientele includes, among others, manufacturers, molders, designers, and research centres from various industries, which selected us for our understanding of their needs and our ability to implement ingenious solutions.” Highly skilled in developing and integrating advanced technologies for the manufacturing of single material or multi-shot plastic injection molds, the company contributes to the long-term profitability of their customers’ projects, while improving their overall production performances with the development of molding processes guided by eco-design principles.

ACTION AND INNOVATION
A team of 20 experimented individuals share their competencies and ingenuity to create and deliver high quality tooling. They have developed over the years an excellent understanding of their customers’ needs, production environments and products. Exacad also provides turnkey services such as in-house plastic injection molding stations with reduced footprint and simplified molding processes. Their engineering know-how guarantees maximal performances and aesthetics of the molded products, as well as energy savings and a reduction of the global manufacturing costs. Since 2004, Exacad offers also workshops and conferences on the design and manufacturing of molds and on the optimization of plastic injection molding processes.

At the time of our interview, the president and founder of Exacad, François Tremblay, had just arrived back from the NPE2015 trade show in Orlando, Fla. Tremblay stresses the need to remain in the thick of the action and innovation in order to deliver an optimized global production performance to its clients. “NPE2015 is a showcase of advanced technologies and their integration into industrial applications,” Tremblay said. He strongly believes that a perfect understanding of the projects’ goals is essential in order to define which actions are the right ones to guaranty the success of the project. He also believes that all products must be carefully tailored to the plastic injection process to avoid production downtime, reduce resin consumption and realize energy savings.

CREATIVE ENGINEERING
In this spirit of performance optimization, Exacad has put forward a complementary engineering which applies right from the product design stage. Why? “Because this is the most important stage of the development process, if your objective is to maximize your molding performances and enhance the aesthetics of your molded products”, Tremblay said.

In fact, most of the products’ life cycle costs are incurred at the design stage. As Tremblay explained, a mold is a precise and accurate production tool, and its design and fabrication is unique. “At the outset, Exacad experts will draft different mold concepts resulting in a detailed design respecting outstanding molding performance,” he said.

Also, each mold is tested, validated and adequately adjusted by Exacad in a real-time manufacturing environment, and the company also offers complementary services such as onsite training and technical support by a certified technician. Thanks to its collaborative platform, its customers have access to the technical data during the production process to prepare them when they receive their new mold. Finally, a mold may come with a 2-year warranty depending on the nature of the project, along with a warranty certificate in regard to the functioning of the mold and its performance.

Exacad’s clientele is located primarily in Quebec and Ontario, as well as in the Northeast U.S. Taking advantage from important reshoring activities by American companies, Exacad is delivering primarily multi-shot plastic injection molds in the US. The company also has national and international connections. In 2007, a technical collaboration agreement was concluded between Exacad and Ermo France. More recently, the company jointed MEDTEQ, a consortium for industrial research and innovation in medical technology in Quebec, to expand Exacad’s position in the international medical device industry.

Venant tout juste de célébrer ses 20 ans d’existence, la compagnie Exacad Fabrication de moules inc. de Boisbriand se présente sous une nouvelle identité visuelle depuis quelques mois. Ce renouveau traduit bien l’engagement d’excellence d’une entreprise qui améliore sans cesse ses équipements, technologies et services pour offrir le meilleur à ses clients. Ce souci d’excellence fait littéralement parti de l’ADN de l’entreprise, laquelle s’est démarquée dès l’année de sa fondation en recevant le Prix de l’investissement 1995, catégorie Jeunes entrepreneurs, lors d’un gala organisé par la SODET.

Expertise reconnue
Si beaucoup de plastique a coulé dans les moules depuis ce temps, Exacad s’est toujours donnée pour mission de créer et mettre en place des solutions innovatrices et sur mesure pour chaque projet de moulage par injection plastique mis de l’avant. En 2010, ses efforts ont été reconnus par l’obtention d’un prix Honoris Innova, catégorie Développement durable – Produit innovateur. En outre, l’entreprise est actuellement en nomination pour le programme Prix PME de la Banque Nationale 2015, catégorie Exportation. Au moment de mettre sous presse, le dévoilement des lauréats n’avait pas encore eu lieu.

« Au-delà des prix – que nous apprécions, évidemment – il y a la reconnaissance de la clientèle. C’est sans équivoque celle qui nous motive le plus. », fait valoir Linda Tremblay, directrice des communications. Composée de manufacturiers, mouleurs, designers et centres de recherches actifs dans différents secteurs, cette clientèle choisit d’abord Exacad pour son écoute et son savoir-faire dans la mise en place de solutions ingénieuses, précise Mme Tremblay. Habile à développer des technologies performantes et à les intégrer dans la fabrication de moules monomatière et multimatières, la compagnie contribue à la rentabilité des projets de ses clients et en optimise le rendement par l’élaboration de procédés d’avant-garde basés sur l’écoconception.

Action et innovation
Regroupant une vingtaine d’employés expérimentés, lesquels ont développé une excellente compréhension des contextes de production et des produits des clients, l’équipe Exacad offre des services clés en main allant de la simplification des procédés de moulage à la conception de cellules pour le moulage autonome à superficie réduite. Les services de génie-conseil offerts garantissent l’optimisation de la performance et de l’esthétisme des produits moulés, tout en réduisant leurs coûts de production et l’énergie consommée. En complément à ses services, l’entreprise offre des ateliers de formation depuis 2004 et donne des conférences sur le design et la fabrication de moules, ainsi que sur les procédés de moulage par injection plastique.

Arrivant tout juste de l’exposition internationale NPE 2015 au moment de l’entrevue avec Plastiques et moules, le président et fondateur de l’entreprise, François Tremblay, souligne qu’il importe de demeurer au coeur de l’action et de l’innovation pour offrir une performance de production globale maximisée aux entreprises. « Le Salon NPE 2015 d’Orlando est une vitrine sur l’avancement des technologies et de leur progression dans l’intégration d’applications industrielles. » M. Tremblay croit à l’importance de bien comprendre les projets afin de cibler la bonne action à entreprendre. Il croit également que les produits doivent être judicieusement adaptés au procédé d’injection plastique pour réduire au minimum la perte de temps, de matières et d’énergie.

Ingénierie créatrice
Dans cet esprit d’optimisation du rendement, Exacad a mis de l’avant une ingénierie complémentaire. Pourquoi? « Parce que c’est l’étape la plus importante dans le design de votre produit, si votre objectif est d’optimiser vos performances globales de production », de répondre M. Tremblay. En effet, la plupart des coûts de cycle de vie d’un produit sont engagés dès l’étape de conception. Il explique qu’un moule est un outillage de production précis, dont la conception et la fabrication sont uniques. « En préliminaire à la fabrication d’un moule, nos experts font l’ébauche de différents concepts, lesquels permettront une conception détaillée en respect des systèmes les plus performants. »

Il est à noter qu’Exacad teste, valide et ajuste tous ses moules à injection plastique dans leur milieu de production. Elle offre également un service d’accompagnement au moment de la mise en route, incluant la formation du personnel et la présence d’un technicien certifié. De plus, grâce à sa plateforme collaborative, les clients ont accès à toute la documentation technique afin de se préparer à recevoir leur outillage de production. Finalement, une garantie d’origine pouvant atteindre deux ans accompagne chaque projet de même qu’un certificat de garantie de fonctionnalité et de maintien du rendement.

Offre étendue
La clientèle d’Exacad se retrouve principalement au Québec et en Ontario, ainsi que dans le nord-est des États-Unis. Depuis 2013, l’entreprise bonifie d’ailleurs ses activités dans cette dernière région avec la livraison de moules multimatières. Mentionnons aussi qu’une association technique avec Ermo France est survenue en 2007 et, plus récemment, l’entreprise s’est jointe au consortium Medteq destiné à la recherche industrielle et à l’innovation en technologies médicales au Québec.
