One of the largest plastic bag makers in the U.S. is acquiring a company said to be the largest paper bag manufacturer in North America.

Hartsville, S.C.-based plastic bag maker and recycler Hilex Poly has purchased Duro Bag Manufacturing Co., which is headquartered in Florence, Ky. On its website, Duro calls itself the largest manufacturer of paper shopping bags in North America.

The terms of the deal have not been announced.

Hilex Poly has a plant in Orangeville, Ont.

“The acquisition of Duro Bag will enable us to expand our portfolio of 100 per cent recyclable products to meet customer demands as well as broaden our reach to other market segments,” said Stan Bikulege, chairman and CEO of Hilex Poly. “We are pleased and excited to welcome the Duro Bag family into Hilex.”

The senior vice president of sustainability and environmental policy with Hilex Poly is Mark Daniels, who has been named as this year’s Leader of the Year by the Canadian Plastics Industry Association.
