Windsor, Ont.-based moldmaker Unique Tool & Gauge is making a multi-million dollar capital equipment investment, and has also announced plans to hire at least 30 new workers.

The company will spend in excess of $3.5 million by the end of 2014 to increase throughput in their moldmaking operations. The new equipment consists of one new Makino high-speed CNC milling machine, three new Makino sinker EDM machines, two Roeders high-speed milling machines, and a central robot for automation. First deliveries to the 60,000-square-foot Windsor facility began in September and all machines will become operational during the fourth quarter of 2014.

“Our capital investment program is market-driven,” said Darcy King, Unique Tool’s president and CEO. “The automotive market for plastics continues to grow, but our competition is global and our customers are moving faster from initial part design to full-scale production, which is placing added demands on us to do things faster and more cost-effectively than ever before.”

The company is also planning to add at least 30 additional professional and hourly employees to its present staff of 90, “in order to position the business for an increase in workload that is expected to last through 2015,” King continued.

Founded in 1982, Unique Tool works with all major global automotive producers and their key Tier 1 suppliers.
