The additives unit of specialty chemical supplier Clariant International Ltd. has entered into an agreement with technology firm Elevance Renewable Sciences Inc. to jointly develop bio-based plastics additives.

According to Clariant, the partnership plays to the strengths of each company, coupling Clariant's market knowledge and formulation development experience with Elevance's patented process technology for renewable additives.

"This is the beginning of a collaboration that can bring renewable solutions with enhanced performance to the market today and expand significantly over the next three to five years," said Andy Shafer, executive vice present of sales and market development with Elevance.

Bolingbrook, Ill.-based Elevance uses olefin metathesis to create ingredients for use in personal care products, detergents, fuels, lubricants and other specialty chemicals markets.
