Bayer MaterialScience partners with SCAC for waste water reuse project

Chemical supplier Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) is partnering with Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Chemical Co. Ltd. (SCAC) in a project that will reuse salt water from the polycarbonate unit at Bayer’s Shanghai facility.

According to BMS, the project will see the conversion of salt water generated in the polycarbonate process into high quality salt brine, which is then utilized in the electrolysis process at SCAC to generate chlorine and sodium hydroxide.

Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly execute a technical installation and trial production program to treat and reuse the salt water from the polycarbonate process.

The project will offer environmental benefits by efficiently using natural resources and avoiding unnecessary impact, Roland Stegmueller, general manager of Bayer Shanghai, said in a press release, and will also generate commercial advantages for both parties.

It’s not the first joint effort for the two companies: “throughout the last 15 years, both companies have increasingly strengthen their cooperation around the supply of chlorine and sodium hydroxide, as well as the re-utilization of hydro-chloric acid,” the release said.
